Why Massage Is A Runner's Relief

If you're a runner, you are no doubt very much aware of how hard your body works to support you in your sport. Training for months at a time and participating in races and marathons, your whole body comes into play to give its best effort. Muscles strain, joints and feet take a pounding, and the rest of the body obeys the brain's stressed commands to keep moving, to win.

You have to take the psyche into consideration, as well. If you're a serious competitor, that is especially so. The mental focus and psyching up for an event is stressful on all levels, and you need to find a way to reduce those stress levels lest you burn out or develop problems that a little self care can prevent.

Your consistent running keeps you healthy and toned, but some TLC goes a long way to extending that well-oiled machine's smooth operation.

When runners take some time that is just for them to recover from the punishments of their sport, it can drastically improve not only their outlook, but also their performance. Massage leaves the mind and body relaxed, and relieves stress. Muscle strain is reduced, and all the kinks are worked out.

Health Benefits

Generally speaking, massage is a great way to soothe sore muscles, but there are healthy benefits that go along with that.

A good massage improves circulation throughout your body, and encourages nutrients to move into the tissues. This alone is enough to reduce injuries, and help to improve your running performance.

If you are looking for a sports related treatment, there are Registered Massage Therapists who are trained in the specific techniques that you are seeking. Deep tissue massage flushs the lactic acid from your legs, and works on areas of the body most involved in running - the back, hips, quads and hamstrings. These are the regions that a Registered Sports Massage Therapist will concentrate on.

As runners are prone to problems with their feet, ankles and heels, it is a good idea to start your TLC program as soon as possible to prevent those minor troubles from becoming larger ones. If left uncared for, you could develop issues with your knees, back, hips, etc. It's all connected.

Massage as Pain Relief

Massage is the perfect non-invasive way to handle pain without pills. During your treatment, endorphins are released to travel through your body and reduce pain in a natural way. Not only that, but pressure applied to the nerves blocks the pain signal to the brain.

If you choose to have a Reflexology treatment as well, you can get even greater results for pain management. This method brings relaxation and healing to the whole body and peace to the mind. Specific areas of your body can be targeted for repair or relief. Just be sure to look for someone who specializes in this field.

Such Pleasant Relief

Massage is a fully-rounded course of action for runners. It is relaxing, mind-clearing, performance enhancing and a problem preventative.

You may receive some homework from the massage therapist, but that will consist of gentle yoga or stretching, or something similar, and only if necessary. The additional help between treatments will hasten your goal to be a calm, confident and lastingly healthy athlete.

Don't hesitate to give this holistic form of healing a try. It is one of the most enjoyable methods of self care there is, and it will make a noticeable different in your life.

You were very lucky ProCW, to have such a luxury so close at hand.  I'm sure everyone wishes they had a spa in their workplace!

A visit to your local day spa may be just the thing to fill that gap.

Thanks for stopping by and reading.

Massages after working out are definitely the ticket! Wish I could afford it more often! Great hub!

Uninvited Writer, thank-you for coming by and reading.  A massage would probably take care of your discomfort and loosen up that back.

Lilymag, thank-you.  I don't know where you're located, but keep an eye out for specials.  Our spas run them, and they can be a big help.  Sometimes you may get one free appointment with the purchase of a certain number, or just a really good discount.  When you find those, try to take advantage if you can.

Yeah. I WAS lucky... hehe... miss it alot! :) They offered a full array of salon and spa ammenities. There was even something called an "Alpha Massage Capsule" which was really nice. It was a capsule that you'd lay inside and select what type of massage you'd like. You could create a custom massage.

The owners were very cool about it and let us all go in there as much as we wanted, as long as there wasn't a client booked for it. I figured out that mornings were best for me. Clients for the Alpha Massage Capsule tended to book in the afternoons and evenings. :)

Anyway, thanks for being a part of HubPages and I look forward to reading more from you!

Great hub!

Thanks for the comment, ProCW!

Our day spas do offer a full array of services and our massages are customized, but we use certified therapists. We do not have an Alpha Massage Capsule, but it sounds really neat, and you obviously really enjoyed the experience.

If you ever get to London, Ontario come and see us for a manual massage. I'd love to hear which you prefer once you've had the opportunity to do a comparison.

I'm enjoying your comments, ProCW. Thanks again.

Darn tootin', Tranndee!  I think any excuse that gets you a massage is a good one.

The easiest way might be for you to get him one first.  Once he's experienced it himself, you're bound to get one!

I only had sports massage once and it made me giggle. I didn't know what to do with how uncomfortable it was (because it was 'treating' sore bits) and it kept coming out as a laugh :-) It was either that or cry, I guess :-)

Hi Jonny.  You giggled, so it made you happy?  :)

Sometimes, if your muscle is spasming or really tight, it needs to have the tension released.  The therapist probably had to apply pressure to get it to 'let go' and relax.  You should have felt looser afterwards.

Did the massage work for you (after the painful bit, I mean)?
